12 Hills of Pentland Christmas
A bit of a last minute inspiration hit upon hearing the Thursday wintervalers’ attempt the ’12 reps of Christmas’. How about 12 hills of Christmas in the Pentlands before some of us headed away for the holidays?
Soon realising that a ’12 hills’ route could quickly just become another Skyline, I turned my map-anorak’s eye to the lesser spotted hills, hillocks, knowes, cairns, and crags of the Northern Pentlands. The rule became that if it was named on the OS Explorer 1:25000 map, it counted as a hill. The stalwarts of the northern ridge were duly included (Allermuir et al.), interspersed with such lesser-trodden delights as Byerside Hill, Fala Knowe, Woodhouselee Hill, White Hill, and the final sloggy, boggy scramble up through the grassy gully onto Green Craig, just north of Allermuir, before descending back to Hillend.
Seven ‘swans-a-swimming’ Carnethies (and friends) turned up to Hillend on Saturday morning for an enjoyable tour of the Pentlands’ quieter slopes with refreshments en route. Rob and I discovered with empirical evidence that Morrisons ‘bog-standard’ mince pies were the more structurally stable shortcrust sweet, compared to their Tesco’s Finest counterpart, which tragically did not survive the high G-force descent of Castlelaw.

The Eskapade
Some photos from today’s run – exit of Dalkeith Country Park to Penicuik. The sun was a surprise!
Leaving The Royal Hotel in Penicuik we quickly rejoined The Esk in the Penicuik Estate. The dogs lead the way, stopping only to be thrown over barbed wire fences. Rickety bridges were manoeuvred, muddy fields traversed and slippery slopes ascended. The weather was perfect, providing clear views over the glaciated Esk Valley meltwater channels.
Reaching the Allan Ramsey pub at 4pm, just as light was failing, provided an opportunity to warm ourselves by the roaring fire and enjoy a festive drink. Thank you Willie for bringing us together and giving us all a great start to the Xmas holidays.

Kirk Craigs Christmas Cracker
Saw this race in the Carnethy Archive from 2017 and thought it would be an excellent birthday bash . The weather was perfect clear, light wind and a tad cool on the tops but no ice. The steep ascents are something of a trudge but provide brilliant descents for those who can negotiate the slippery paths. It was only my second real race of 2019, and hopefully I’ll do more in 2020. Carnethy had five runners in the race . First home for us was Angela Mudge who was also First Lady, I think in eleventh position . Not sure of other placings as results weren’t out as I had to leave early. This a very friendly race in the tradition of hill running, just turn pay your entry and run. Many thanks to the organisers.

Carnethy Annual International Club Pub Run
Anonther year, another Pub Run. Another Hangover.
It was at the Club Prizegiving party that The Ex-Pres brought up the Pub Run.
“Lets do a new route” so after a few days and a few emails we agreed a new route. Then I looked back at last years route and it was almost identical. It is funny how the Pub Run brings on amnesia , I cant imagine why.
So over 20 runners met up at KB for a swift half before setting off.
A quick Photo Call in the Hall and then we were off.
Liberton Rugby Club welcomed us as usual and half wy through our drink the Sumo Wrestle of the Presidentioal underpants took place. A danger to health and safety IMHO.
Then out onto the Rugby Pitch and on to “The Robins Nest”. Welcomed by the locals we all got rather overheated before posing outside for the Pub Website Photocall.
Ellens Glen led us a nice off road route to “The Waverley” where we had another half and another photocall.
The it was off to Coylies House. Jura nd Mince Pies. I reckon we frightened the neighbours with our Carole Singing.
Offroad again to The Stable Bar. A pint this time and some more Mince Pies and a warm fire. A quick chat with the locals and a few Hilarious Tales of Pooh from the New President (note to the next president to check the pants for skid “Marks”).
The rain came on as we headed out, so a quick stop in the archway to put on Waterprooofs before heading to Whitlies Whisky Garage. We lost Billy and Dorothy But Ex-Pres Jim went to the rescue. Whisky, Red Wine and tablet. Wonderful.
Braid Summit was next with a swift whisky-mac on the golf course on the (fair)way , then flavoured Gins (not liqueurs) by the top. They were rather strong but after diluting with Gordons Gin (That is the Runner Gordon and not the Gin!) Liqueur was quite palatable.
Then it was downhill all the way to The Waiting Room for a pint.
A great night as ever.
The morning after demanded some full fat coke!
Christmas Party and Awards 2019
Trophy Winners
Burns Scott Trophy – winner John Busby – for organising the mini mountain marathon events
Scald Law Trophy – winner Jasmin Paris – for winning the Spine race by 11 hours and 55 mins!
Allermuir Junior Trophy – no winner this year
As no nominees were suggested by attendees, it was agreed that this Trophy would not be awarded in 2019.
The proposal of Amber Cameron was rejected as Amber Cameron was, at time of AGM, a 2 year and 4 month old dog, hence marginally over 16 dog years, using the widely utilized, but scientifically unvalidated conversion factor, accepting that Amber was, indeed, a family member of the club.
JBF Trophy for Best Overseas Performance – Olly Stephenson – for running the Haute Route Pyrenées during a year of chemotherapy
Club champs – Alan Hogg – ran 14 of the 17 qualifying races (although tied with 6 points from 6 races, with Andy Fallas and Michelle Etherington, they only ran 7 and 6 races respectively)
Billy’s Goat on a Gruff – Lucas Lefèvre – For his athletic improvement and enthusiasm for the club, including organising Wednesday evening runs
Radical runner – Alex McVey – For his impressively keen running of 30 Pentland tops in January in celebration of his 30th birthday
London Marathon Place – Peter MacDonald
Members of the Racing Club attending the AGM were given the opportunity to enter a ballot for 2020 London Marathon. As no member of the Racing Club expressed any inclination to run around the streets of London, Peter MacDonald volunteered himself to take the position. This was accepted on the condition that he ‘cross your heart, hope to die, finger in eye…’ pinky-promised to join the Racing club for 2020. Let’s see!
Club Handicap – Scott Robson
Wooden Spoon – Several nominees of varying ineptitude were rated on the cock-ometer but Mark Hartree’s attempt to release a poo unnoticed into the wild only to be stymied by a black lab and its diligent poo-bag wielding owner was judged a worthy winner.

Prize Giving
New president Mark Hartree took centre-elevated-chair at the annual prize-giving and party on Wednesday evening. What a night for the fellow – celebrating his birthday and walking away with Carnethy’s most-prized Wooden Spoon award – the lengths he went to in achieving this don’t even barely bare thinking about. Or was it just a load of fake s%#t in keeping with the times…..?
Around 100 members turned up to Hemma for an enjoyable evening of conversation, food, drink, a quiz, prizes and much more. As always, the prize-winners and those nominated (see below) provide incredible inspiration (well, except Mark) as we head into 2020.
Thanks to Dorothy, Nicki, Nikki and Sean for helping with the quiz, photos, prizes, and much more. And also to Graham Nash and Bob Johnson for bringing new levels of precision to assessing the Wooden Spoon Award winner.
*Apologies to those Veg-eaters who missed out on food because of ‘shy vegetarians’. For next year, we’ll have to have a Veggies-eat-first policy or establish a quota of ‘Meat-eaters who rather fancy the veg option’ in calculating the food order!

The beer for the 50th Anniversary Carnethy 5 is fermenting!
Yesterday I drove up to Freewheelin’ Brewery in Peebles to get a brew on that will be given out to all runners and marshals at the race in February. We once again set ourselves the challenge to brew a beer that would be 5%abv using 5 different types of malt and hops, with the added challenge of using hops that begin with the letter C. Disaster had almost struck the day before when Richard went into Brewstore to pick up the additional ingredients that he didn’t already have at the brewery only to discover that they had run out of Citra. Luckily there are quite a few hops beginning with that letter and he replaced it with Cashmere. I won’t bore you with details of the brewing process, it all seems to have gone well and will hopefully be a tasty golden ale.

Trossachs Night Trail Race 2 – Callander
Twenty four hours before the race Callander main Street was under water, lucky the floods subsided but left a few very wet patches underfoot. The night was wet and cold but it didn’t stop 141 runners toeing the line. Alasdair Campbell, Cambuslang flew round in a very fast 30.32 setting a new course record. Stewart Patterson, Carnegie finished in 2nd with Carnethy’s Eliot Sedman in 3rd; and 1st V50 was Kenny Richmond, Shettleston, who finished 4th overall!
In the ladies race Catriona Buchanan, Ochil HR was once again first , with Kate Bain, Glasgow Uni Tri in 2nd and Catriona Lang, Dundee University 3rd. Thanks to Dundee University for travelling all the way on a dark and damp night.
Thanks to all the marshals, Arlene for making copious amounts of tea, Buchanan Estates and Callander golf course. Please contact trossachstrails@mail.com if there are any errors in the results.
