I just managed to finish the Milan Marathon today before the race closed. It was the warmest marathon I’ve run and training in the Pentland Hills over the winter didn’t give me the correct conditions to sail through this race (as I usually do, of course). At 30k I was aware of being stalked by a policeman on a motorbike and was beginning to feel a wee bit uncomfortable about this, when all of a sudden he revved the engine and then sped off down the road, using the white lines in the middle of the road as a slalom course. What was that about?? Within a kilometre of the finish when I finally caught up with the group I’d been following for ages, an ambulance cruised slowly by and the driver said something in Italian. I was afraid he was going to advise us to stop because we weren’t going to get to the finish by 6hrs. So I kept my head down, overtook the group and finished in about 6:10. Not bad considering the warm weather. Wonderful way to tour the city!
