There were quite a few Carnethies at the 4th round of the Borders Cross-Country on Sunday, which was held from Chirnside. The interesting thing about Chirnside is that it is on top of a hill*, which means the course starts by going downhill. Once you get to the bottom, you run round the hill for a while on an old railway line, then the rest of the course (and quite a large chunk) is back uphill- with lots of stubbly fields and muddy patches thrown in. First Carnethy back was Graham Nash in 8th place with Stewart Whitlie next in 16th. Helen Bonsor had a good run to be 3rd woman, and not far behind her was Rachel Newstead who was 5th woman.

*Actually to be fair to Chirnside, there are other interesting things about the place, such as David Hume went to primary school there and the village clock (very 1960ish) is a memorial to another famous local, Jim Clark. So that’s three interesting things you know about Chirnside now !
