Here you have it folks, the final segments…
Due to variable weather, and the addition of a third segment, these segments will last 10 days. On the 8th of February we will tally it all up and deduce the winner of the HBT v Carnethy battle.
We have decided the captain of the losing club will have to leave their club and join the winning club.
Just kidding, but seriously please put any attempts in the google doc so that you can add a tally for Carnethy.
We have a few absolute belters to end on so best of luck team, give it your all xx

Strava Smackdown week 3
*STRAVA SMACKDOWN PENULTIMATE WEEK*
Things are close in terms of participation numbers so every segment counts.
This week we bring you two, one kilometre, segments. Again, please enter yourself in the google doc below.
One is filthy steep and climbs 462 meters.
The other is potentially worse as it sees you climbing only 43. So, get your racing shoes on and channel the long-lost road runner within yourself (only briefly though)
If lockdown is proving hard then please reach out to a club member, there is no worry too small or conversation not worth having – especially if it’s over a snowy plod.
May the odds (weather) be ever in your favour

12 Hills of Xmas roundup
Xmas is long gone and the Smackdowns are now in full swing. 14 took part in the 12 Hills challenge of whom 9 did all 12. Lucas Lefèvre should get a prize for doing all 12 in one awesome push – something I didn’t think possible. Michelle Hetherington is rumoured to have done the same but didn’t enter anything on the googlesheet. Times are fairly meaningless given the variably bad weather. Well done all. Sorry the table is a bit of a mess!

Comments:
Alan Renville – 5th Dec- 7 completed in 4:31- Black Hill, Bells, Castlelaw, Turnhouse, Carnethy, Scald & Hare
Andy Spenceley – Had all weather conditions for this great set of races. Really enjoyed the series.
Mark Hartree – Just to say cracking work coming up with the 12 Hills. On 5 Dec, after aborting after Castlelaw in miserable weather, I slipped and broke a rib descending Caerketton. 4 weeks later, after a gentle build-up, managed 6 in one go. V slow, but splendid day in powder snow and direct lines. Next day did Spittal and W Kip in stunning weather but tough across to Borestone and across Kitchen Moss. Last 3 done in wet snow and rain using microspikes on wet ice. After busting a rib or two on 5th Dec I did not think I would do them. A few weeks letting it knit together followed by gentle walking, then bobbing and trotting and I managed 11 in 3 days with Castlelaw thankfully done on 5th Dec making the last day easier, but still over 3 hrs. It is a really tough series and even the link-ups make quite long days. It will be worth doing again in summer over a longer period. Hats off to Lucas and Michelle to doing them in one go. It was a tough day for me to just do 6 together. Overall, it took me 14.5hrs so should be by far the slowest.
Strava Smackdown week 2
We are into our second week of the HBT v Carnethy strava duel
We hope taking part in these segments will give us that family feeling we are all missing right now
We have a beautiful new excel so after you have completed a segment please pop down your club and name. Every attempt will count towards your respective club!
This week’s segments will see us taking on braids and (the much more significant gradient of) Hillend
The best way to calm any perturbation is the perspective hills offer. Also, the fact we are now one week closer to our reassemble
* p.s We are currently getting our ass kicked*

Week two segments:
Hillend – Caerketton
Braid Hills
Carnethy trophy winners
Well, not much of a prizegiving party this year!
Ken Fordyce – Burn Scott Award winner 2020 – for outstanding contribution to the club. Ken championed and organised the Pandemicaps over the autumn from conception to completion, allowing 146 runners to get out there and compete against each other in a socially distanced manner – and Morag McIntyre was the winner.
Sasha Chepelin – Scald Law Award winner. In August Sasha ran 32 Munros in under 24 hours beating Jim Mann’s 2017 record of 30 Munros.
For details of the awards see the Trophy Winners page.
AS Handicap January 2021 results
Either people were busy homeschooling, or they were put off by the weather, or they were off skiing in the pentlands, but a smaller list of finishers than usual this month.
The weather certainly played a part, Gordon ran in microspikes, most people waited until after the thaw and had to deal with the post-snow gloop. This month’s winner is Elspeth (who acknowledges it was in part due to a slower run with her daughter last month!)

Strava Smackdown in collaboration with HBT
Dear all in the Edinburgh area,
We would like to announce that for the duration of lockdown 3.0 we will be releasing two strava segments a week to keep us all entertained.
These will be released at 5 pm every Thursday and will last one week.
For this we have TEAMED UP WITH HBT who will also be running the same segments (its not a competition… but let’s hope Carnethy win)
We hope that this will provide some stimulation for your brain and aerobic system.
On a side note- It may also be a nice time to ensure you smile as you pass other people on your exercise outings – you never know what they could be going through and it may just make their day a lil easier
Please ensure you also look out for friends, family and yourself ❤
We look forward to seeing every attempt- so run, walk, ski or crawl your way through the segments. It’s only ever showing up that counts!
