We were actually back on the train to Edinburgh before the Equinox hit at 21.58 last night, but there was certainly evidence of lingering daylight and summer being upon us.
A dozen of us made the trip down to Stow (and apologies for missing Alan Swanson at the station) and we set off under the watchful eye of Phil Young for an 8 mile run to Gala. Conditions were good, very dry in places and boggy in others. The route took us over various fields, along farms tracks and some tarmac, and we saw up-close how large these wind turbines are. Large. A couple miles from the finish we stopped at Dobie’s Grave, where in 1790, a piper named Dobie accepted a wager that he could play his pipes all the way from Lauder to Galashiels. He set off from Lauder but on reaching this spot, collapsed from the effort and died. A cautionary tale. We ambled into Gala in time for a drink and some food. Neil Burnett then proceeded to break the world record for running a mile carrying a burger and jumping on a train. Impressive stuff. Hopefully the new members running last night had a good introduction to the club.
That’s the end of the night runs – next stop, Boghall Handicap on 24th April
