From my recent experience it may be appropriate to publicise this:
If you’re out and about in the Pentlands you should be aware that the Army carry out exercises, and have a dedicated firing range on the south side of Castlelaw Hill. These activities involve an assortment of weapons and ammunition. Sometimes things don’t go quite to plan, resulting in bits and pieces of military debris “lying around”.
If you’re out and about, maybe off the beaten track, you may come across such “stuff”, as I recently did. From this experience there are 3 things you should do.
1 Do not touch it
2 Make a careful note of the location
3 Phone Police 101
The Police will take the matter very seriously, and will act very quickly in conjunction with the ‘bomb disposal’ team.
I failed on 2 above; but knew exactly where it was on the featureless hillside, so it was located without any problems. I also failed on 1 above. This might have had a very unhappy ending; but fortunately for me this 2” mortar shell (about 9 inches long) was smoke filled, not ‘live’. Or I could have lost my hands. Or worse.
In any event, it was a very interesting distraction from 24/7 Covid 19.
