Carnethy team “Haggis on Tour” wins Peak Marathon (HPM), a team that included Jasmin Paris, Konrad Rawlik, Ian Whiteside and late edition James Mann.
The HPM is an overnight mountain marathon for teams of four which follows a route based on the Derwent Watershed over the high moors of Derbyshire, over 40 miles (if you get your nav right!).
First organised in 1972 by members of Sheffield University’s Youth Hostel Society. The event is now organised by the University of Sheffield Mountaineering club. A unique feature of the event is being greeted by a couple of cheerful students at every checkpoint, with checkpoint 13 on the Pennine Way Ford perhaps being the loudest. As mountaineers, setting up checkpoint 12 half way down the crag now makes sense.
Cancelled in 2018 due to heavy snow, this year the race was blessed with mild temperatures and only some light wind and rain mid race. Landowner restrictions which are becoming a real challenge for in the Peak district events, meant this year’s event detoured through some new boggy ground.
Haggis on Tour had some competition from all male team Penny Lane Peglegs, both teams sharing the best split times for most of the race. Haggis on Tour endurance prevailing in the later stages to secure a solid victory. A sprint at the end guaranteed the team got breakfast first in the Edale village hall and also no parking ticket.
Two other Carnethy represented teams included “Carnethy Old Yins” and the “The John Hewitt Appreciation Society”, both finishing 8th and 12th respectively.
Some questionable navigation by Carnethy Old Yins left them having to make up lost time on faster sections.
Pre-race words from un-named Carnethy Old Yins member suggested nav was in safe hands: “Both myself and John [Busby] are comfortable with nav, John will be a pro after Dark Mtn! so happy to take that on”.
First all-female team finishing 4th overall, went to Nicky Spinks and her team “3 Blind Mice and a Farmer’s Wife”.
