A great turnout from Carnethy at this year’s Stuc a’ Chroin hill race, well done to all 33 finishers. This was the second of the Scottish Champs counter races. The weather may have been dreich, but the friendly faces and great organisation made up for it.
The 21km, 1650m course was not to be taking lightly, the direct route up Corbett Bienn Each from Glen Ample is one of the steepest you’ll find in a Scottish hill race. Luckily you don’t have to run down that way. There was not much to see at the top Stuc a’ Chroin on Saturday, just a few hardy marshals.
Carnethy Catriona Graves rocketed up the hills to claim 1st female, with a comfortable gap of nearly 9 minutes ahead of 2nd. Tim Morgan also had a fantastic run moving from 7th to 2nd place after the top. Tim: “A very pleasant surprise to come 2nd. Carnethy winning team too. Great route, organisation, race atmosphere. Rather tough course. Top day out, will enjoy the gin!”.

The Carnethy fountain of youth was in full flow with the top 3 in the MV40 and top 2 in the MV50 categories. Rumours are the source maybe somewhere in the Pentlands. Andy Macrae denies falling in it, but results suggest otherwise.
Eliot Sedman finishing 3rd MV40 gave the competition a master class in descent running towards the finish. Eliot: “A great race in wet conditions. I found the ascent of Beinn Each extremely challenging, heather grabbing to get up the steepest section. An exhilarating descent from the deer fence. Good to see so many hill-running friends afterwards.”
Carnethy young guns Pippa and Rosie came 1st and 2nd in the 18-23 category.
