Scottish Islands Peaks Race 2017

May 29, 2017 Filed Under: Other Races

I’ve just noticed there isn’t anything on the club site for the Scottish Islands Peaks race from the other week, I guess I’d better add something!  We had a good number of club members out for the race, both running and marshaling (an occasionally doing the sailing bit).  I’d started to write a report, but I on the 6th page I decided I was waffling too much and deleted it – a lot happens on three days of racing.  So, to summarise the Carnethy runners and riders from the people I know…

John Ryan was paired with Gwyn, a Westie (Phantom).
Eoin was paired with Alexis Dole, both Carnethies (Warrior),
Graham and I, again Carnethies (Sundance of Lorne).
In other teams we had Anthony Hemmings with Al, a guy from Reading (Contender).
Ed Watson and Lyndsay Doig were the adults in two Fettes youth teams (Bluebird and Damsis).
Jasmin was in an all-rounders team with non-Carnethies Jon Gay and Liz Barker (Reever).
John Coyle was with non-Carnethy (I think) Crawford Whyte (Synergie).

Can’t find a photo of Lyndsay 🙁  Sob.

So, a fair number of Carnethies in the race!  There were also tonnes of them at various marshaling points across the Hebrides!  Great to see!  I’d just like to thank all of the marshals from all of the clubs that came-out to support the race.  To a man, and woman, you were all superb!  Additionally, a massive thanks to the organisers, Nick, Alison Sarah and Toben!  As I currently sit, having just returned from the race, I can honestly say it was a great adventure, and a fantastic way to spend the weekend!

I think everybody made it round with the exception of Anthony, who’s partner fell ill on Mull.  Results on the SIPR website, and the here’s Graham’s wee video that he put together, in case you haven’t seen it.  Oh, and you can re-run the race on the yellowbrick link on the SIPR home page.  It’s an interesting watch!

Ramsay’s Round

May 29, 2017 Filed Under: Ultra

I succeeded in running the 101st Ramsay’s Round on May 26-27, ably assisted by a clutch of Carnethies. Starting at 5pm to catch the best of the weather – 28C at Glen Nevis youth hostel with a lightning storm forecast for the following afternoon – and proceeding anticlockwise, I ran the Mamores unsupported, with Mark Hartree (and Sparky) providing outstanding static support at Luibelt shortly after midnight.

John Busby then ran with me into dawn to Fersit, where we were met by a team of Highland Hillrunners and several million midges. Mark Hartree was again on hand in the Grey Corries to offer support and a mobile massaging service when I was feeling particularly weak and feeble. Andy Fallas and Helen Bonsor were waiting on Stob Choire Claurigh thereafter. I met Chris Busby at Coire Bhealaich for the ‘last big climb’ (up Spinks Ridge) which is definitely not the ‘last big climb’.

The rain started on Ben Nevis but it did not matter by then. I was down in 22 hours and eight minutes. I appear to be crying in a photo at the end when I was actually recovering from a Cava-related injury caused by an exuberant Graham Nash.

Thank you so much to all the Carnethy runners who helped me fulfil a very long-held ambition. What a privilege it is to be among those 101 rounds.

Carnethys marshal the Edinburgh Marathon Festival

May 28, 2017 Filed Under: News

No.1 question of the day was surely “Where do we leave our bags”, and the oddest “do they bring the bags back here?”. Er… no, that would be a bit pointless, the finish is in Musselburgh. In a masterstroke the organisers provided us with drab blue jackets as worn by less visible council workers with ‘Welcome Team’ written on the back, to be hidden by rucksacks. A few of us grabbed hi-vis and got to answer the above question as no-one recognised the blue jacket wearers as anything to do with the race. Rodney gamely fronted the operation in one and was roundly ignored.
Two Carnethys were spotted (but there were more starters on London Rd. – see below) – the indefatigable Margaret, who may have run every Edinburgh marathon there ever was; and John Hammond who we met running the other way. John ran the half, then ran back over Arthur’s Seat in a time that might have seen a sub 3hr marathon.
Bob Johnson managed not to see the two best costumes – a four Viking longboat and a very creditable Buzz Lightyear, whose arms you can just make out either side of another runner who is photographing him on his phone, as my lethargic camera took its time firing up. Zoom in on that phone.
Commiserations to the toilet marshals, a position eagerly fought over… “not me”, “someone else”, “no way”. The club earns a fee for each marshal, and we all get a good quality wicking running top (though the bright colour is not to everyone’s taste), and all the discarded bananas you can carry. The bacon rolls were very good this year too.

No 100 on Ramsay’s Round Finishers Page

May 27, 2017 Filed Under: News

At 05 31am on Saturday 27th May 2015, Alicia Hudelson from the USA returned to Glen Nevis Youth Hostel having spent the previous 23hr 46m on Ramsay’s Round travelling in a anticlockwise direction.
Alicia attempted the round just over a week ago and retired after 17hours on these hills having used the run as an extended recce and as a learning curve going forward.
As she was due to return home to the States on the 9th of June, with a quick recovery programme and an excellent weather window, she returned to the start line on Friday morning at 5 45am, a much more prepared and wiser contender.
She is now the 5th lady to successfully complete the round within 24 hours; hopefully we will see many more of the female gender on these hills in the future.
Huge congratulations to Alicia on being the 100th sub 24h finisher; enjoy your recovery.
Well done.

Cape Wrath Marathon

May 23, 2017 Filed Under: Marathons, News

We’ve been to the Cape Wrath Challenge races every year since its initiation in 2002, and usually run the marathon. With Sally’s London Marathon Good-for-Age time for 2018 in the bag from last year’s Edinburgh race , we could do the much tougher Cape Wrath marathon without time pressure. My view of marathons times has evolved. In the early 80s I was only a couple of minutes shy of sub-3. By the late 90s and early 2000s my view was that if it was sub-4 it still counted as running. By now, if I get to the finish before Sally has got bored waiting for me that’s a plus.

The Cape Wrath Marathon is a 22-mile out and back (with 2400 feet of climb) to the lighthouse on the most north-westerly tip of the mainland, followed by a timed-out ferry crossing before the final 4+ miles to the village hall in Durness. The road on the Cape has deteriorated over the years and is now a rock-strewn, pot-holed track. The out-and-back route and the staggered start times means that you see pretty much everyone else in the race in one or both directions and gives the added challenge of holding off the runners starting 20, 40 or 60 minutes behind you.

I held off virtually no one. Sally disappeared into the distance. Adam Ward passed me commenting that he wanted to hold off Angela, who started 40 minutes behind him. Sally just about held off Angela, who started 60 minutes behind her. Angela, despite just “running for fun” was first woman and 10th overall. Sally made another Good-for-Age time. I had a personal worst by a considerable margin; it just wasn’t my day.

1st – Sam O’Neil (Headington Road Runners) 2.44.44, 10th (1st F) – Angela Mudge 3.26.43, 41st – Adam Ward 4.13.56, 50th – Sally Cross 4.25.46, 75th – Ian Jackson 5.05.31
93 finishers. Full results are here: http://capewrathchallenge.co.uk/2017-results.html

In a double, both Murray Strain – winner, and Finlay Wild – second, broke the course record. Andy Fallas came in 3rd.
Dessie Flanagan was 1st V40 and Stewart Whitlie 1st V50. With the cream of the ageing whippets out in force in this championship race there was nothing for me, though I had a spell of hope as the top 3 in each category (a very civilised thing to do) got a prize. Carnethy men won the team prize.
There were plenty of Carnethy prizes in the SAL champs too but since I unwillingly paid SAL £2 for the privilege of their ‘piggybacking’ the race I’m going to ignore this.
A dodgy forecast turned into a lovely day over the course of the race. All the Carnethys save Simon T returned unscathed to a feast of cake. He’s ok, but rather scraped and bloody. This race has a high injury quotient. The winning lady limped painfully over to get her prize having just returned from the hospital.
Everyone then variously dispersed to either get the ferry back, go off and enjoy more time on this lovely island, or go and marshal in the Scottish Islands Peaks race at Lamlash.
