Mourne Highline
Jasmin stormed back onto the fell-racing scene by winning the first British Championship counter of the year at the Mourne Highline in Northerin Ireland (race report here: http://www.nimra.org.uk/index.php/jardine-and-paris-conquer-the-mourne-highline-in-less-than-perfect-conditions/). And the Carnethy ladies team appear to have come a close third behind Eryri Harriers and Helm Hill. Jasmin was the first of ten Carnethy runners to complete a demanding technical course run entirely in dense fog until the last mile or so back down to Newcastle. Compass use was essential, as shown by the way the leading men (including raining British champion and Carnethy 5 winner, Carl Bell) ran a bizarre arc off the final hill which took them right out of contention.
The race was sandwiched into the middle of an enjoyable social weekend (full report to follow in the Carnethy Journal) with the only missing element a chance to actually see the supposedly beautiful Mourne mountains in which we ran. Carnethy times:
Jasmin Paris, 1:51:49
Nigel Shekleton, 1:54:15
Alex McVey, 1:56:07
Pete Curtis, 2:02:44
Helen Bonsor, 2:09:11
Will Normand, 2:10:16
John Busby, 2:16:32
Rachel Normand, 2:20:20
Tracy Ballinger, 2:43:16
Kenneth Fordyce, 3:09:48
Winter talk change of venue
The venue at King’s Building is not available tomorrow due to a fire there today.
We have been offered an alternative venue closer into town, so the final talk is still on:
Edinburgh University Students Association
Teviot Row House Building 42
13 Bristo Square
Edinburgh EH8 9AJ
The Room name is (The Study). Large screen and sound. Library Bar will be open as will the Sports Bar.
Parking is better around Crichton Street or towards Buccleuch Place. Various buses can get you there – see Lothian Buses https://lothianbuses.co.uk/getting-around/journey-planner
Sorry for the change, hope you will still come.
Boghall Boggicap
Also christened the Bogmire by Wyn Rampen, though I remembered it as Foggicap, which was definitely true as Wyn went on to get lost. He was by no means the only one as the Strava Flybys show. In spite of this only 3 were missing in the gathering gloom and they too were located, somewhere or other. So we repaired to the Steading, where it was much easier to take photos. Please may I have a better handicap next time?! My purple patch of last year gave me a hopelessly optimistic time. Once the fasties had left me I rather enjoyed the misty squelchy run, towing someone who’d have been as lost as the others if not for my rather lucky dead reckoning. And the soup was excellent! The results will be a bit delayed as Phil is taking advantage of the lovely weather to go on a cycling trip. Should be out on Sunday I think. Oh and a record 68 starters I believe. A challenge for the finish recorders.

The club now has a twitter account – CarnethyHRC – and also a page showing our twitter activity here (under the ‘Club’ menu), so even without a twitter account you can see what is going on. It’s a good place to check (particularly if you are a non member) whether eg the Wed training has been cancelled, or Hill reps are on.
Boghall handicap start times
Start times for Wednesday’s Boghall handicap. Usual collection of random numbers loosely based on 2018 C5 times, 2017 handicap times, a mysterious formula and hacking into people’s Facebook pages.
If anybody is not on the list, it would be great if they could contact me as soon as possible.

It was supposed to be “Four Horsemen from the Apocalypse” from the east again but all I found was these geezers in the picture.
Jamie liked the “other way round – it means you have a chance to warm-up before hitting the first steep hill! And it’s a good steep finish down the grass from the Crags going in reverse”. He picked a good line left of the zig zag steps down the grass and brambles to avoided all the tourists.
Digby and I chose a less optimal route with some “inching gingerly down the suicidal eroded bit”.
Mike was going well but also made a couple of small diversions.
Traditionally we don’t run it on Mayday so 14th May will be the Summer one.
