Club training reports…
First Wednesday night runs since lockdown
Carnethy took its first steps back to normal club training with the Wednesday runs resuming last night. With the rain hammering down I was slightly regretting saying that I’d lead the slower group but most sign ups were gamely waiting at the Commie Pool despite the monsoon. We did a tour of some of Arthur’s Seats greatest hits and we’re rewarded by the rain stopping and an atmospheric sunset.

MMM Navigation Training
This weekend was the first Carnethy MMM event for the year, set up by John Busby, to help us newbies improve our navigation skills. Kirsty attended the earlier brief before we both departed from The Steading, battling against very strong winds. Armed with map and compass we headed towards where we believed the first check point was located. It proved more challenging than we thought……undeterred we continued on. After being nearly nearly blown off our feet at Windy Door Nick it was reassuring to to see friendly Carnethy faces out on the same mission.
Photographic evidence is our proof that we were successful to some extent. We decided to cut our losses and miss out the furthest away 30point check point.
Fantastic morning out, allowing us to get more confident as we went around. The most important things we learned are that 1. You need to wear far more clothes than when on a normal run to stay warm, with all the stopping, searching and starting we were both very cold at the finish. 2. Probably best NOT to run with a friend if you both have a lot of chat to catch up on, concentration is key! 3. This type of event is great fun.
Well done to everyone who took part and to those who ran faster, further and with more expertise than we did. Thank you to John for the opportunity and encouragement.

Monday night ladies’ run
Monday evening saw a record turnout for the Ladies’ Run… 19 ladies and 1 man… beating the numbers for the first run in the new year when 18 ladies ran… might have been the after-run Prosecco which attracted the crowds that night. Anyway this Monday was a chilly evening but our president Mark braved the elements in shorts to join us the first half and to share his wisdom. Everyone was pleased and impressed that he joined us but we were clearly too fast for him and he had to peel off before the Braid Hills.
A lovely run with plenty of laughter and chatting followed by soup, bread and brownies chez Nicki (Innes), who hosted the first Ladies’ Run in 1996.

Wed Training 7.30 run
I thought we were running round in circles for most of the run tonight but the shape of the run turned out to be a large flat W. Willie was obviously thinking about the first letter of his name when he took 9 of us on a wonder over to Craigmillar Castle play park. On the way back we ran through the Inch Park and Willie kissed a puddock. Not sure if he was simply confirming the fact that he is Prince Charming or was hoping the puddock would turn into a princess. Great run, Willie! Many thanks!

7@7 Social 10the July 2019
With Michael back as the 7@7 routefinder, a Lucyless group set off, wondering if it would be rain or humidity that got us the wettest.?? As the sky brightened, good honest sweat won out (at least for your scribe).
The anagramatical amongst you might see the connection in the title, and thus it was, a mixed up version of the normal Craiglockhart route. Old favourites, such as the Car Wash Wall and the GreenBank Fence Bypass were seamlessly incorporated.
To help level the runners’s speeds, Michael took not so much a leaf, as several chapters from “Willie’s Book of Spontaneous Route Adjustments”.?? Having apparently let (most of ) us off the steps up Blackford hill on our way home, he took us round the corner for an even steeper ascent. Nursing a slightly dodgy leg, Norman had wisely peeled off to make his own way home by this point.
So, whilst the outline painted on the map look more like an infant’s attempt at an emaciated dog than a scorpion, the run had a wee sting in the tail for the fasties to revel in.
