Join the women’s runs round Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside. Now weekly! This is a social run and we welcome anyone who is up for running about an hour or so in hilly terrain. Most runs are off-road, away from traffic. Meet on Monday nights 6.50pm ready to run at 7pm. To join the group, please text Marion Bourbouze on 07919381893 to get a link to join the Ladies What’s App group where updates and location of each week’s run are posted. If you don’t have what’s app, just download it here https://www.whatsapp.com/. The group is also used to arrange other runs at weekends or to send an email to all women in the club, you can use ladies@carnethy.com |
Winter Soup & Runs From October to March, we meet at someone’s house and the hostess leads the run. We then come back to hers for a well-earned soup. Anyone can host a run – you just need to come up with an hour or so run from your house (as off-road as possible – hills not necessary but welcome!) and make soup for the runners. Thanks a lot to all the volunteers for this year’s runs. Summer Runs In the lighter evenings, after the clocks move forward, we usually leave the trails of Edinburgh and head for the surrounding countryside, generally in the Pentlands and around (previously including Aberlady beach, Dalkeith country park etc.). No soups provided for these runs although there are talks about bringing some cakes to share! |

Bill Gauld was for a long time an honorary lady for our Monday sojourns. He celebrated his 81st some time ago. In appreciation of the yummy cake and the camaraderie on Ladies night, he penned this thank you –
To all you girls with smiling eyes,
Who once a fortnight cheer me, I wish that I was half my age, And you were always near me. |
Ladies run reports –
Carnethy Ladies Run in Colinton
On Monday evening the Carnethy Ladies and Bill met at Margaret’s house and ran down to the Water of Leith. Bill and Joanne carried on at a slightly slower pace along the river, while the rest of us ran on upstream to Woodhall Farm and the new luxury accommodation for horses. The owners of the horse hotel have greatly improved the Circumnavigation of Edinburgh route up to Tiphereth. Until recently this used to be a narrow and very wet path squeezed between two fields, but now the burn has gone, the land drained and hardcore put down to make this a much easier running route.
From Tiphereth we ran up and over the old Torphin Hill Golf course which is happily returning to nature with lots of interesting paths produced by walkers and runners. We carried on over to Torduff Reservoir and then onto Bonaly, passing a field of alpacas. Next came the plod up White Hill and then down to the new Dreghorn Woods and under the bypass to the Polofield and the Covenanters’ Wood and finally, through the gate to Margaret’s garden. Many thanks to everyone who came along!

Carnethy Ladies in Town
On Monday six Carnethy Ladies (including Kirsty’s dog, Lily) ran from Senga’s wonderful top floor flat in Newington into the old town. We followed cycle paths through Dumbiedykes down towards the Parliament, then across to Jacob’s Ladder and up to Calton Hill with amazing views over the city. We dropped down to Princes Street and then up Market Street to Castle Hill. We followed the Patrick Geddes Steps down from the Castle to the Grassmarket and then more steps (up!) by the Flodden Wall to Lauriston Place and Quartermile. Lots of contrasts in the very old and the modern architecture on our route. We met up with Bill when we arrived back. Many thanks to Senga for a great run and delicious soup and cake!

Carnethy Ladies in Town
Five Carnethy Ladies ran from Patricia’s house on Monday evening. We ran across Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows to Arthur’s Seat. There was still a lot of ice about, so we trotted down to Hunter’s Bog, then up the hill to Salisbury and across the Meadows. Back home we enjoyed wonderful vegetable broth, Irish stew and banana cake with lashings of tea. Many thanks to Patricia for a great run and delicious food!

Carnethy Ladies on the run
Seven Carnethy ladies ran from Margaret’s house on Monday night. We ran down to the Water of Leith, under the Bypass to the metal bridge at Woodhall Farm and then up to Tiphereth through a burn on a narrow path. Thankfully the rest of the route over to Torduff Reservoir and Bonaly was on better ground. As Kirsty and I were running down White Hill we realised for the first time (ever!) we were in the lead, but Joanne was distracting the others with a good story. Finally, we ran over the new centenary wood (where the trees are still a bit on the short side, but growing) and under the Bypass again before a short run through the Covenanters’ Wood and home.

Carnethy Ladies Run
Ten Carnethy Ladies ran from Kathy’s house in Willowbrae out to Holyrood School and then along the Innocent railway path where we had a photo shoot a bit like another Catherny run 10 days ago. However, this run took us on a different route up Arthur’s Seat (which wasn’t nearly as scarey, thank goodness!). We ran over the top of the summit and back down to Kathy’s where most stayed for birthday celebrations, but a few of us living in the Wild West of town were grateful for a lift home from Kirsty. Many thanks to Kathy for a great run!

Carnethy Ladies’ Run
Monday night saw 11 intrepid Carnethy women running through wind and rain to the Craiglockhart Hills. The blustery wind made it impossible to hold the camera steady for the photo shoot at the summit of Wester Craiglockhart Hill, but you can see we were clearly having fun! A fast run back by the leaders, meant that a few of us got lost and almost took the wrong way through a golf course before Senga put us on the right track and we eventually regrouped with the A Team and made our way back to Philippa’s. We rounded off the evening with delicious butternut squash and sweet potato soup, followed by yummy fruit cake. Many thanks to Philippa for hosting the evening.
