Dundee was dry but cold and windy (in your face on the exposed sections of course). Those of us who did it last year had the benefit of knowing what was ahead, which maybe explains why some of the stars that got the men’s team to 5th place decided they had to wash their hair.
The ladies didn’t manage to get a full team out this year but Charlotte made up for it and had a great run to come in 4th in the ladies race, only a few seconds off 2nd behind a Central AC clean sweep. Helen and Rachel completed the Carnethy results, with Kate turning out for Gala.
In the gents race Andy and Craig returned from last year and as I don’t have any hair to wash so did I. The talk beforehand was of getting a V50 team place (ah the innocence of youth – there was no such competition), so we all thought we had reason to slog our way round the three 2 mile laps (6.1 miles in total – tantalisingly short of a decent Strava 10k time). Anyway – the race was won by familiar figure Murray Strain with Andy sneaking a top 20 place. Craig, spurred on no doubt by Charlotte’s vest was 2nd counter with Iain G following. I was 4th counter – gaining 2 places on my 2013 result (so at least I’ve something to be thankful for last years fantastic four spending Saturday doing their nails), with Tom and Harry completing the counting places to get us to 10th team. Mike, Bob and Micah completed another impressive Carnethy turnout.

Will we get full teams out for the nationals in February (weekend after Carnethy)? If you fancy trying some XC but haven’t a place in the borders series then the East District League have their next race on January 17th in the wilds of Broxburn (it’s free too, see http://www.eastleague.co.uk/)

This was a fun low key event run on quiet roads and muddy tracks in a roughly 8 and a half mile loop around the Eildon Hills. We were lucky enough to have a nice weather window of beautiful sunshine for the duration of the race. It was horizontal sleet by the time I drove back home. The route was undulating and the promised mud was ankle deep at points so it was all good fun and a nice way to run off one or two mince pies. Results will be here melroseroadraces.com

Three carnethy vests. The race kicked off the start of the day’s festival. I baulked at inflated prices for the run on trails that I run regularly as they are a couple of miles from home. But travel was easy, I cycled, Craig ran. So it was a late decision to enter on the day, a little unprepared.
Well organised and marked race with an excess of marshals. Foxlake run a professional venue, I’ve been swimming and played disc golf there too.
It was my first running race this year other than the FRAs. Perfect conditions, vest and shorts. There were a few canine assisted runners – as I faded in the second half of the race I could have done with being pulled along.
Although this was my home patch there was plenty of the route I don’t normally run, mostly as it’s not so interesting, but a race is always different from training. I even managed to wipe out on a slippery bridge, unused to running in my elderly walshes. My estimate of 58 minutes was accurate; I was just ahead of Craig, and Allan Renville was three minutes after him. Results http://www.webscorer.com/racedetails?raceid=33494
What stood out was the balance of men and women, almost 50:50.
There are three other races in the series, including a 10 km night run. See https://www.facebook.com/foxtrailrun?ref=ts&fref=ts

With the arrival of winter temperatures in the last couple of days its time for the annual Carnethy photo/art competition.
This year we are looking for imaginative ways to form a picture or words using a GPS trace on a route (either on a GPS watch/device or using Strava).
My festive themed example: (“Christmas”) [done on a Garmin watch]

….And a birthday wishes example: (“Happy Birthday Dad”) [done on Strava]

Its trickier than you think it is. You can choose to draw a picture or write a message or both – bonus points for festive and Carnethy themed routes.
You have until Wednesday 10th December 2014 to get your entry in.
Please send your entries in a GPX file to carnethysecretary@virginmedia.com.
If you’re unsure how to export a GPX file from your Garmin/GPS device, or download from Strava – ask somebody that does.
We will have judging and awards at KB after the training runs at 9.00pm on 10/12/14.
Keep it clean!

A low key race in its 14th year was a blast for me. The Water of Leith Half Marathon runs from Harlaw Road in Balerno and finishes in Leith. Its half a mile over the half M distance, down-hill, twisty in places, wet and muddy under foot. The odd road crossing to test your car avoidance skills, a blast. It runs as a handicap to get everyone in together at the end for lashings or tea and medals. There was plenty of that followed by a few beers and nibbles in the pub.
There were a good bunch of Carnethies at the muddy start in the woods with people nipping off for discrete and not so discrete pees and things. Having never run a half marathon race before I figured go off as fast as I could and hang in there. The good news was that I overtook a lot of runners and was overtaken by only two, including Roddy McRae, who I was sure was Graham Nash and therefore put up my best fight for the last 2 miles – only to find Graham was a bit further back. The result for me was totally trashed legs for three days after. Kate Fraser and Philippa Iveson were the first girls after the winner – Neil Jones. The results are below to figure out who did best with or without the handicapping.
