Paddy Buckley Round
Taking advantage of a 23 hour weather window in North Wales, Graham Nash and I got down this weekend to do a Paddy Buckley, with the support of Liz Barker and Jim Mann. Following a photo with a man wearing a muzzle and a rope (towel was a late addition), we left Capel Curig at midday on Saturday on a clockwise round, 15 minutes after the rain stopped.
We made reasonable progress across the summits, hillocks, tussocks and fences that count as tops, dodging the worst of the bogs and by dusk we were comfortably up on schedule. Liz and Jim took turns at enduring our chat to Craig Wen. Darkness slowed us considerably as we crossed Yr Aran towards a deserted Snowdon a little before midnight, the trains having stopped for the night. The not-quite-full moon broke through the cloud for much of the night. Dawn and sunrise on the Glyders buoyed us towards the last leg across the Carneddi, where Liz joined us again. Speculation was rife. Would man-in-muzzle-and-rope still be at our start-finish point? Would Jim have taken his place? Did Jim have rope? If we started at ‘man-in-muzzle-and-rope-tied-to-post’ but finished at ‘just the post’ could we call the round complete? We completed at ‘just the post’ in 22h 28m, 15 minutes before it started to rain again.
We were both humbled by the knowledge of the round shown by Liz and Jim, as well as their willingness and enthusiasm to share in this adventure.
This completes the ‘big 3’ for Graham who also now joins a short list of runners to complete all 3 rounds in a season.

Handicaps standings after 4 rounds
Lucas Lefevre has a narrow lead over Helen Wise and David Harrington. But only 10 points separate the top 7 so everything to run for with 2 more races to go.

Clennell Trail Race
There was a half marathon, marathon and ultra on offer, with distances fairly approximate but beautiful routes on nice runnable (and remarkably un-boggy) trails in the southern Cheviot hills. I ran the HM with my sister and enjoyed it so much I wish I’d gone for the marathon. Not so sure about the ultra, I think folk fell in bogs & went a bit off piste on that! Results will be on the High Fell Events webpage.

Philiphaugh race
A Carnethy two three, with Fergus Johnston 2nd and Nigel Shekleton 3rd. Fergus also won a spot prize of a bottle of whisky, the lucky man! Nothing for me but the satisfaction of a PB, getting back in just under the hour, 6 mins faster than my previous in 5 runnings, yet still 7 mins behind the super fast V60 winner. The going was surprisingly dry considering the abundance of showers, one of which passed by half an hour before the start. Great low key race with a 4 mile option for juniors or walkers. Results. More photos over on the race FB page

Carnethy send a raiding party to Ben Rinnes – Dufftown Highland Games
Coupled to his recent ASBO (Ed: really?), Bob Johnson, “volunteered” to (a) run the Ben Rinnes hill race (b) collect as much litter as possible from the course and (c) write up the results for the world-class website aka Carnethy-dot-com. (Never again will Bob launch himself and his vehicle into a village breaking the 30mph speed limit).
Carnethy indeed sent some great runners up to the Dufftown Highland Games last Saturday and dominated the race with two wins (Andy Fallas 1st overall and Stewart Whitlie 1st V50) and half of the first six being Carnethies. Helen Bonsor took an excellent second to the very-much-on-form Jill Stephen (aided and abetted by James Waldie who is coaching her). The tough “five tops” hill race saw an out-and-back course from Dufftown to Ben Rinnes and back with two minor hills on the way there and the way back (making 5 in total). Carnethy runners are shown in the attached files.
Mike Lynch fell heavily on the descent of Ben Rinnes – chasing grandad Bob Johnson who had also “measured his length on the gravel footpath” (Ed: I’ll let that go but only just) on the same descent. Bob collected a few gel wrappers, three tissues (one very much used), three coke cans BUT no medal. Bob said that it was a privaledge to run with a Carnethy shirt on again…

Wed training
After avoiding the “wee bit too fast for me” 7 o’clock runs over the last few weeks and it being the 5th anniversary of the Speed of Light Edinburgh festival event, it was time for a Speed of Michael run taking in some of the paths on Salisbury Crags used 5 years ago. 7 of us set out to Craigmillar and Duddingston before heading through the woods, nettles and brambles to Dunsapie. Ruth left after that leaving Tracey and me to try to hold the easy pace. We had great views from Whinnie after the earlier weather had cleared and a scree descent that was new to a few on the run. Gordon and I reminisced as we went up and down and up Salisbury Crags and explained the significance of the SOL tree and hub 3 to the rest of the group. A faster return as Gordon was keen to get to KB in time for a shower. Total distance 11.29 km or 7.0 miles over 1 hour 37 minutes,

Craigmillar Castle – The easy 4 miler
With the slow going fast and the fast not going and the extra slow dragging the majority away it was nice to just go and do the usual – 4 miles-ish in an hour.
So through Inch Park to Craigmillar and attacking it from the rear we found an abandoned car before seeing the Castle.
The run back involved the obligatory play park stop.
4.4 miles in 62 minutes!
Willie Gibson
Eeek, I see the slow and moderately slow groups have both put up a report already and we’ve got nothing so here goes…
“The “not the fast but also not too slow” group of 4, formed effectively when most of the others simply ran off following Michael, ambitiously decided that we’d make for Allermuir via Blackford, Hermitage, Braid Burn Valley park and the route up to the (now closed) Dreghorm car park past the barracks. A punishing pace on the flat outward sections was made up for on the long slog up Allermuir, made ‘interesting’ by the wet grass on the very steep initial face which almost led to us slipping back down. From the top of Allermuir we headed diagonally down to Hillend and from there we followed the usual route back across the bypass to Morton Hall and then back to KB via Tower Hall Farm. A total distance of 11.4 miles in around 1hr 50 minutes and while I was glad to just make it back to my car, Rachel Newstead then headed off on foot to run home!”
