If you like your mountain biking long and hard, then this is for you. Perhaps I should have thought about that before entering, because I conked out after 3 laps, had a sleep then managed another two. Yes, the only event to date where I’ve managed to sleep mid-way. Each lap was just over 10 miles and 1,400 feet, with the joys of the blue and red trails on descent at Nevis Range.
Bob J has suggested doing this as a pair next year, which sounds like a very good idea. Perhaps I can have several sleeps then.

The Three Peaks race takes place in my home county of Yorkshire over the hills of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. I have walked over these hills many times as a kid but this was my first time running over them. The route starts out from the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, with a loop through the village to spread the field out, and then a quick pull up Pen-Y-Ghent. From the top it was then a long run of about 14km to go under the Ribble valley viaduct and to the bottom of the next hill, Whernside.
The three peaks is a very popular walking route with many hikers to be avoided and the scarring on the hills horrific. Here, the race route takes the direct line up Whernside and away from the walkers’ path. This was my favourite part of the course and the descent down to the final CP fun. Maybe too much fun as Ingleborough felt longer than it should have.
The final run down I found tricky as the limestone rocks forced you in to boggy sections which my tired legs could have done without. The route then goes through a back garden and pops you into the finishing field. The atmosphere at the end was fantastic with hot food and a band playing and limited edition 3 peaks beer for sale (From Northern Monk – if you are ever in Leeds I recommend a visit)
Carnethy were honourably represented by Charlotte Morgan (3:39:20; 76th place and 1st WV40) and Nigel Shekleton (3:42:44 and 89th place) and more modestly represented by me (4:38:09 and 440th).
A cracking race, Yorkshire did us proud.

Our roving reporter “Eric” reports:
Bob Johnson just about snuck in for the new world record of the “fastest marathon as a three-dimensional toy (male)”. Bob is currently undergoing extensive (and somewhat painful) tests to determine whether the open-brackets-male-closed-brackets tag should be modified in someway. So if you have “evidence” in that area please feel free to come forward with that.
Bob reportedly had knee problems such that his early pace (heading for around 4:30) was slowed greatly and only just got the record by a slim 30-second margin. The official finish time was 4:59:30 so he could have done that interview with Colin Jackson after all. Bob (wimp as he is) reported problems with the heat, cramp in his left hamstring and the aforementioned knee pain. He puts the knee pain (ditto re: wimp) down to the fact that the London course has 16 miles or so of right-hand road camber, a fact that proper runners may like to consider if London 2019 is your next target. Final reminder that the London 2019 ballot is now open, if you fancy a trip to the capital. Also if you have a recent-and-decent marathon time then the fast-fit-for-age entry system opens of 1st August until 10th August (refer to the London Marathon site for all details). Bob says a massive THANK-YOU to all sponsors – you are ssooo BRILLIANT…
Photos attached show few lo-res images plus a water feed station photo with Bob’s hand (mm) out of the bottom of the shell…
